League One Side Oldham Raided By HMRC As Team's Tax Problems Continue

League One side Oldham was raided by U.K. tax authority HMRC on Monday as its "problems with the tax man continue," according to Gaughan & Keegan of the London DAILY MAIL. Around 15 officers reportedly arrived at Boundary Park, "taking copies of hard drives from computers inside the stadium." The club, which was placed under a transfer embargo last season, "faced a winding up petition earlier this year." Wages were paid late in September and an Oldham statement read, "We can confirm that HMRC visited the club premises today. We have, and will continue, to cooperate with them" (DAILY MAIL, 11/27). The MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS reported Oldham has been "linked with a takeover" during the past couple of months, "but it is believed that will drag on longer than hoped for" as interested businessman Abdallah Lemsagam "is said to not only want to buy the club, but also assets such as the stadium and land." The issue regarding the land "is said to have prevented other parties from purchasing the club in the past, including Marwan Koukash." It is "unknown whether the issue" with HMRC could affect Oldham's deal to bring in a new member of the coaching staff, as the club "looked to be on the verge of naming Paul Jewell as assistant manager for the rest of the season" (MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS, 11/27).
